I am a personal growth junkie, always looking for a new read. Something to help me grow. Something to help me better understand myself. Something that will enlighten and invigorate change and betterment in my life. Something that provides incredibly friendly reminders of basic concepts that for some reason I seem to constantly forget.
Let me start by saying I have never really carried any issues with food. I love food. I love making food. I love the experience of food. The community. The celebration. Everything. I’ve also never had issue with food and my health. I’ve gained weight, I’ve lost weight, I’ve gained weight again and I’ve lost weight again and frankly it was never about the food and more about my own discipline and my thyroid…
However, in a world where there is always a new fad, a better diet, a great get thin quick plan, I wanted to read this book to confront questions I carry about why I eat and indulge the way I do. I am the poster child of the book’s summary – someone who wants to eat healthfully, but often times makes hasty decisions that go against my health goals. I am the person who sacrifices my own health plan for the sake of the rest of my family so that they are comfortable. I am the person who often times chooses the less healthy option when confronted with options – pizza vs salad – always pizza. This hasn’t hindered my life or health, but boy am I interested in knowing why.
This book takes the reader on a delightful journey full of humor and truth. Shira Lenchewski has a way of calling you out without cutting you down. She has a way of making you laugh while identifying a bad habit you constantly cave to. She has the ability to tell a story that makes you feel like you are not alone. All the while sending friendly little reminders of how you can simply do better and be better. She provides great insight into tips and tricks on how to make your healthful journey more successful.
The book starts with identifying some basic core habits and determining what categories each reader may fall into. Then providing a better understanding of each category so the reader can truly see themselves and their habits clearly. She then moves onto giving the reader tools to adjust bad habits that fall within each category and finally provides overarching tips and tricks to eat a in a more balanced and healthy manner. Of course there are delicious recipes and great ideas to set yourself up for success too.
Without giving all the goods aways, I will leave you with this gem of a nugget, “… it’s to make food decisions that reflect what you really want for yourself while knowing how and when to loosen the reins so you can stay healthy, happy, and balanced for the long haul.”
My book is filled with hot pink highlighter, I hope yours will be too. There is no easy ticket, magic pill or crash course to healthy – no matter what kind of healthy you seek – it is all about the long haul, the forever journey, the time and effort you are willing to make on yourself. This book is a great start to understanding yourself to make long and lasting changes as you see fit in your nutritional journey.
